Police Clear Pro-Palestinian Encampment at University of Michigan

Police cleared a pro-Palestinian encampment at the University of Michigan on Tuesday, May 21, with President Santa J Ono citing a “disregard for safety directives” and a “series of troubling events” as contributing to the decision.

Footage by Doug Johnson Hatlem shows officers moving in, and using a chemical irritant several times. Hatlem said that officers gave protesters a 10-minute warning to clear out, but that they began using the spray before the 10 minutes had elapsed.

Ono said “individuals will be welcome to protest as they always have at the University of Michigan, so long as those protests don’t violate the rights of others and are consistent with university policies meant to ensure the safety of our community.” Credit: Doug Johnson Hatlem via Storyful
