Police hunt man who shoved pedestrian into traffic after they 'brushed shoulders'

This is an image of a man wanted by police for pushing an innocent pedestrian into the path of traffic in the City of London.

CCTV footage released by police today shows the victim, 57, being shoved from behind into the road where he narrowly avoids being hit by a taxi.

Police released the footage as well as a photograph of the suspect taken by a member of the public in an attempt to identify him.

The footage shows the victim walking on the east pavement of New Bridge Street at around 8am on the morning of July 23.

Police say the victim brushed shoulders and exchanged words with the suspect moments before the incident. The victim carried on walking to work but was followed by the suspect who then pushed him towards the oncoming cars.

The pedestrian suffered grazes to his hands and arms and was dazed briefly.

Passers-by rushed to help while others followed the suspect to confront him. One member of the public took a photo of the man.

Detective Constable Duff, from the City of London Police, said: “We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident in July or who may know the man in the photograph.

“The quick thinking actions of the taxi driver undoubtedly prevented this incident having much more severe consequences for the victim. However he is still naturally shocked and horrified by what happened to him. “
