Police name man found dead in Newport murder probe

Police have named a man, whose death sparked a murder investigation. Lee Crewe was found unresponsive by Gwent Police officers on Chepstow Road in Newport on Tuesday night.

Mr Crewe, 36, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service. In a statement Gwent Police said Mr Crewe’s family is receiving specialist support.

A 21-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder. He remains in police custody. Gwent Police is not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

Detective chief inspector Virginia Davies, the senior investigating officer in the case, asked for the public’s cooperation with the ongoing investigation. She said: "We would like to reassure the communities of Newport that we are doing everything we can to establish the circumstances surrounding his death. "Officers are currently in the area carrying out further enquiries; if you have any questions or concerns, please do speak to them. As our investigation continues, we ask you not to speculate or share information online which may cause harm or upset to the victim’s family or jeopardise our investigation.

"Our thoughts remain with the victim’s family and friends. We urge you, if you have any information, even if you think it is minor, that could assist our enquiries, please call 101 or direct message us on social media quoting 2400157385." Anyone who has dashcam footage or CCTV from Chepstow Road or in the area around Merriott Place between 4.45pm and 7pm on the afternoon of May 14 is also asked to contact the force.

Following his death tributes for Mr Crewe poured in on social media. One friend called him "such a gentle giant" while another said he was a "real good mate who will always be in my heart".
