Police provide update on reports of 'man with machete' as schools in lockdown

Multiple schools are in lockdown after reports of a "man suspected to be in possession of a machete" in Washington, Sunderland.

Some schools have been forced to go into lockdown this afternoon (Thursday, June 20) after reports of a man behaving threateningly in the Lambton area of Washington.

But police have said that the incident is "not ongoing", with reports being made yesterday evening. The force has confirmed that they are currently looking into reports.

Extra police have been stationed across the town "to provide reassurance to residents".

Speaking to The Northern Echo, Springwell Village Primary School have confirmed that they are currently in lockdown, but nearby Usworth Colliery Primary School said they are not.

Little Treasures Nursery has also been in lockdown this afternoon.

Washington Academy has said that they are not under lockdown, under the advice of Northumbria Police.

The academy told parents: "All students are safe and well, and if there is any change we will inform parents immediately."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “We can confirm we are aware of posts on social media in relation to a man suspected to be in possession of a machete in the Lambton area of Washington.

“These reports are from yesterday evening – and we can confirm there is no ongoing incident in this area.

“We can confirm we are currently looking into the reports.

"There is an increased police presence in the area to provide reassurance to residents.

“We are aware that a small number of schools have taken the decision themselves to go into lockdown.

“There also continues to be a lot of speculation surrounding potential sightings of an individual and we would ask people not to spread misinformation.
