Police seek man in West Side shooting

Apr. 9—A man was injured by gunfire outside of a West Side convenience store Friday, and police are looking for the man who shot him.

The shooting reportedly stemmed from a dispute over $75 that the victim reportedly owed the gunman.

New Castle police on Monday charged Ryan James Fitzpatrick, 27, of Bell Avenue, in connection with the incident that sent the injured man to St. Elizabeth's Youngstown Hospital with a bullet wound.

The shooting reportedly occurred around 3 a.m. in the 400 block of West Washington Street.

According to a criminal complaint, the victim told police Fitzpatrick was to pick him up to go and play dice. He said Fitzpatrick asked him for $75 he owed him from a year ago. As they pulled up to the convenience store, Fitzpatrick pointed a gun at him. He said he started to run from him and Fitzpatrick fired the gun and he fell after being hit by a bullet.

He said Fitzpatrick then asked him where the money was and took $41 and a debit card from him. He said a friend saw him stumbling on the West Washington Street bridge and took him to a hospital, the report said.

An officer reported the victim had gunshot entry and exit wounds to the lower left side of his back. The police also found multiple shell casings on the ground in that area, and they saw surveillance video of the incident, the report said.

Fitzpatrick is charged with criminal attempt at criminal homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, three counts of robbery and one count each of carrying a gun without a license, simple assault, theft, receiving stolen property and harassment. A warrant has been issued for his arrest. Suspects are to be considered innocent until proven guilty or adjudicated by a court.
