Police: Speed was not a factor in Friday's fatal accident

Dec. 16—LEWISBURG — Speed did not play a factor in Friday's fatal pedestrian accident in Lewisburg, according to police.

Buffalo Valley Regional Police Department Sgt. Fred Hetrick said Mabel Shively, 77, of Millmont, was attempting to cross Market Street and walked into the path of the tractor-trailer. It was determined that the tractor-trailer was traveling at a very low speed and that Shively attempted to cross the street midblock and without the use of the crosswalk. No charges will be filed in this incident.

"Speed was not a factor," said Hetrick. "We do get complaints about the speed of trucks coming through there, but that was not the case here. It was just a tragic accident, sadly."

Police identified the driver as Erik Nybo, 50, of Williamsport. Nybo, who was not injured, was driving a Staiman Recycling Corporation truck.

Hetrick said they were not able to find any surveillance footage from Market Street to help with the investigation.

"The only video we found was the dash cam (on Nybo's truck)," he said. "It was very helpful."

Union County Coroner Dominic Adamo said Shively died due to injuries suffered in a pedestrian and tractor-trailer accident in the 300 hundred block of Market Street in Borough of Lewisburg. The accident occurred at about 11 a.m. Friday.

A portion of Market Street, which is also State Route 45, was closed after the crash and reopened just before 3 p.m. Friday. The road between Third and Fourth streets was blocked off by emergency responders and the sidewalks were marked off with police tape.

Buffalo Valley was assisted at the scene by the William Cameron Engine Co., Union County Sheriff's Department, state police from Montoursville, PennDOT, the Lewisburg Borough Street Department and Milton Fire Police.
