Police: Winfield man assaulted officer during arrest

Feb. 29—LEWISBURG — A Winfield man accused of violating a protection from abuse order allegedly tried to push an officer down the steps of a porch in Winfield, according to Buffalo Valley Regional Police.

Coal Nevin Inch, 22, of New Berlin Highway, Winfield, was charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault of a police officer and stalking; and seven misdemeanors: one count each of evading arrest, escape, harassment, and two counts each of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. The charges were filed by Buffalo Valley Regional Police Cpl. Travis Burrows in the Lewisburg office of District Judge Jeffrey Rowe.

Burrows said a woman reported on Feb. 2 that Inch messaged her four times on social media and interacted with 14 of her posts. The interaction violates a protection from abuse order (PFA) entered by Union County Judge Michael Piecuch on Dec. 29.

Inch has been arrested four other times in the past three months for alleged PFA violations with this woman. He was also arrested in 2023 by two other agencies for allegedly violating the PFA by harassing and stalking the woman, police said.

The woman said she blocks Inch, but he allegedly makes up new profile names, police said.

Burrows, Buffalo Valley Regional Police Department Sgt. Frederick Hetrick and Mifflinburg Borough Police Sgt. Tracy Fetterman and Officers Blaina Martin and David Shaffer went to Inch's residence in Winfield. Inch allegedly attempted to leave through the back door when he encountered Shaffer, police said.

Shaffer and Burrows allegedly struggled to take control of Inch. The three men tumbled out of the door and down the steps onto the ground where Inch allegedly tried to push everyone up to get away, police said.

Hetrick used a stun device on Inch, who then complied for a moment, police said.

Inch was advised to place his hands behind his back, but then Inch rushed into Shaffer, using his arms to push the officer toward the porch steps, police said.

Inch was restrained, escorted to the police cruiser and placed under arrest. Inch again allegedly attempted to flee, but was restrained again, police said.

When being placed in the cruiser, Inch allegedly tried to break away from Shaffer, but was unsuccessful, police said.

Inch was transported to the Union County Jail where he used his commitment calls to call the woman with a PFA against him. He allegedly tried calling her four times, police said.

Inch was arraigned on Monday and committed to Union County Jail in lieu of $200,000 cash bail. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 11 a.m. March 7 in front of Rowe.
