Singer Gary Barlow allegedly used a tax avoidance scheme to protect his fortune, according to a politician.

Funnyman Jimmy Carr issued an apology on Thursday after it emerged he exploited a loophole in the law to pay a small amount of income tax.

Now Take That star Barlow has been dragged into the scandal after leading Labour politician Angela Eagle alleged during a House of Commons debate that he also "used" a tax avoidance scheme.

She blasted Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron for criticising Carr but failing to condemn Barlow, suggesting he was giving the singer some leeway because of his political leanings.

She also questioned why Barlow was awarded a prestigious Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal in Queen Elizabeth II's Birthday Honours List earlier this month.

Eagle said, "Oddly, (Cameron) did not take the opportunity to condemn as morally repugnant the tax avoidance scheme used by Conservative supporter Gary Barlow, who has given a whole new meaning to the phrase Take That. If he is also morally repugnant, why has he been given an OBE in the Birthday Honours?"
