Feisty swan loses eye in Ropner Park dog attack - but now he's back with park keeper pal Tony

A feisty swan who lost an eye in a dog attack is back on his beloved Teesside lake - where he has ruled the roost for almost 18 years.

The swan - who has now been named Nelson - has been a favourite with staff and visitors alike at Ropner Park in Stockton for years. The drama began two weeks ago when visitors reported seeing Nelson being attacked by a dog, but swimming off.

However, over the next few days park keeper, Tony Crossen, who was on annual leave, said he became inundated with messages from people concerned about Nelson seeming poorly. Worried Tony said RSPCA inspectors were called out and had to go out on a boat on the lake to see what was wrong with the bird, they took him away for treatment and everyone had an anxious wait.

But, thankfully Nelson has now been returned to the park and despite having lost an eye, he is back to being in charge. Tony said: "He's been here for years, we have quite a connection. I'm so pleased he is back ruling the roost.

"He is such a character - he won't let any other bird on the lake. When a male swan came before - he walked him right down to the park gates and left him there for me. He always comes straight up to me when he sees me. He's a bit of a hero on the park."

Although the swan didn't have a name before, Tony said: "He can be called Nelson with only having one eye.. I think Nelson really suits him."

Tony, who has worked at the park for more than 17 years, said Nelson has had two previous partners who both died and is now with his third partner and they have just had their second set of cygnets. Swans can live up to 30 years, so hopefully Nelson will be impressing visitors for many years to come.

Tony said since the incident with Nelson he is urging all dog owners to keep their pets on the lead when near the lake, he added "It's common sense really".
