Popular Island High Street pub crowned after County Press competition

The results are in, and one popular Isle of Wight pub has been crowned the County Press’ Pub of the Year 2024!

Voted by our readers, Ryde High Street’s The Castle Inn has claimed the coveted title.

The traditional ‘wet-led’ pub is well-known for its welcoming environment and its enthusiastic and friendly staff.

The pub opened in 1850 and is set within the Grade II listed building on the corner of Ryde High Street and John Street.

From Freshwater to St Helens and Sandown to Porchfield, some of the Island’s most popular pubs and bars made this year’s shortlist.

Ten Island pubs made the shortlist: 

  • The Sportsman's Rest, Porchfield

  • The Castle Inn, Ryde

  • The Bugle Inn, Brading

  • The Vine Inn, Freshwater

  • The Vine Inn, St Helens

  • The Hogs Head, Newport

  • The White Hart Inn, Havenstreet

  • The Star Coffee and Ale House, Ryde

  • Caulkheads, Sandown

  • Newport Ale House, Newport

Last year’s winner was the Crab and Lobster Tap in Ventnor.
