A popular Leeds nightclub will be closing for good as it 'can no longer operate as a viable business,' following 'immense' financial pressures.

The Wire, on Call Lane, will close down due to 'commercial challenges' brought about by the 'cost-of-living-crisis and changing lifestyles,' after 18 years of welcoming revellers into their underground drum and bass, house and techno venue. Management has stated it will close on Sunday, June 2.

The team behind the Wire has said the financial woes began after it reopened, following the pandemic. They also thanked friends, punters, staff and artists, old and new, who had supported the venue. The venue will continue to host events until it closes.

A statement, shared by the Wire's Instagram page, said: "Since re-opening after the pandemic the UK nightlife industry had been under immense pressure which we have not been immune to.

"The cost-of-living crisis and changing lifestyle choices coinciding with other looming commercial challenges unique to the venue has gradually led to the unavoidable outcome that the club can no longer operate as a viable business."

It later added: "As you can see from our closing date, we still have over a month of parties left, so we look forward to seeing you on the dance floor before the lights come on to signal the end of our epic journey. Keep your eyes peeled for some special additional closing party events that we'll be announcing soon too. Much love from the Wire family."
