Beloved independent Japanese restaurant Nishimura has opened a second eatery in Uplands, its owner has confirmed. The restaurant, which serves a wide range of authentic Japanese dishes including sushi and noodles, started life in Brynmill and served local people there for eight years, before moving to a larger site in Mumbles in 2022, after it outgrew its tiny home.

At the time, business owner Frank Nishimura rebranded Nishimura Brynmill as RyuGin (which means "dragon shout") Japanese bar, before later moving this business to Uplands Crescent. Now, Frank has confirmed he has changed the bar into a second Nishimura restaurant, serving all the popular dishes from the old site in Brynmill and the other Mumbles venue - including a new 'All You Can Eat' offering.

Explaining why he decided to change the bar into Nishimura restaurant, Frank said: "We had been operating in Brynmill for eight years. Many of our guests, who are like family, still live here. Moving to Mumbles is not very convenient for them. With the advice of many good friends, we decided to return to provide the same quality and service. We would also like to thank the Swansea government [council] for its financial support." For the latest restaurant reviews, sign up to our food and drink newsletter here

"Nishimura in Uplands is in operation now," he added. "I'm just waiting for the council permission to change the front shop [signage]. But inside and the menu is the same as Nishimura Mumbles."

Previously, Frank explained that Nishimura in Mumbles Road, Mumbles and RyuGin (now Nishimura) in Uplands Crescent, Uplands, were in better locations than the original restaurant on Brynymor Road.

"I love it here! Everything is close: there’s Costa, bars, supermarkets, restaurants - it’s like a second Wind Street!" Frank previously said, of Uplands Crescent. "There's people of different ages and we get more students here! When we moved to Mumbles, it was great to have a bigger place, but our customers in Brynmill said it was too far for them. So we wanted to have somewhere in SA1/SA2 area."

"You don't have to go to Japan, you just need to come here!" Frank joked. "We've got Japanese food, Japanese sake, Japanese whisky. Come and try our new restaurant, I'm very, very proud!" Try WalesOnline Premium for FREE by clicking here for no ads, fun puzzles and brilliant new features

The new Nishimura Uplands sports a sleek and stylish, contemporary Japanese design and seats 35 people. It takes its name from owner Frank Nishimura's surname, which is a common surname in Japan and means "west village", he said.

On the menu, you'll find lots of authentic Japanese dishes including donburi (bowls of rice with your choice of toppings including chicken teriyaki, salmon teriyaki, tuna sashimi etc), tempura (with prawn, vegetables or sweet potato), udon noodle soup (with pork katsu, chicken katsu, prawn katsu or pumpkin katsu), katsu curry (chicken, prawn, pork or pumpkin), ramen (Japanese noodle soup with king prawns, salmon teriyaki, spicy beef or vegetables, to name a few toppings) and bento boxes (a traditional set menu with various dishes from the menu served together on a tray).

Plus, there's a wide range of starters and salads, as well as several varieties of sushi, nigiri, hosomaki, sashimi, and chef's specials.

If you fancy going all-out, an All You Can Eat deal is available every day. For a set price, you can have as many dishes as you want from the menu (excluding some specials and drinks) for an hour and a half. Please note, if you wish to take part then your whole table/group have to participate too.

Nishimura can be found at 39 Uplands Crescent, Uplands and 580 Mumbles Road, Mumbles. The restaurants are open from 5pm to 10pm Mondays to Thursdays, and from 12.30pm to 10pm Fridays to Sundays.
