Porsche driver's lucky escape after fence post smashes through window inches from his head

A Porsche driver cheated death by a whisker - when a fence post smashed through his seat just an inch from his head on a country drive.

The driver was a fraction from being impaled when the luxury Boxster sportscar lost control before hitting the fence nearly a wealthy village.

Eye-witnesses at the scene saw a jagged fence post protruding through the windscreen, above the steering wheel and between the driver's headrest.

The lucky driver escaped with minor cuts and bruises after the wooden panel missed him by an inch - and a passenger was unscathed.

The crash happened on a country road in Shirenewton, Monmouthshire, on New Year's Eve morning and no other vehicles were involved.

An eyewitness, who asked not to be named, said: "The driver hit the kerb and hedgerow and the fence saved him from entering the adjoining field.

"Upon hitting the fence, this then broke up causing it to go through the driver's door window, through the driver's headrest and push through the rear window."

He said the car - a Boxster 987 worth more than £50,000 - was severely damaged on the front driver's side and at the rear.

"Luckily at the time there was no other road user," he said.

"The driver got away with what looked like a minor cut above his right ear and the passenger a minor cut by his left ear.

"Both driver and passenger were very very lucky, the driver was less than one inch from being impaled through his head."

Gwent Police confirmed they attended the scene and are investigating.
