Let's be honest you don't get much for three quid these days.

Obviously making your own lunch is cheaper than anything else, but there are times when you need to grab something on the go, which is where the trusty meal deal comes in.

And Poundland is going head-to-head with the likes of Tesco and Boots, by launching its own 'unbeatable' deal, costing just £3, which is the cheapest around.

Launching under the new brand name 'Grab A Bite', you get a main, a drink and a snack, with no loyalty card needed.

It's available in all Poundland stores, with the ranges developed in partnership with Greencore and On A Roll, a new fresh sandwich supplier from the North East of England.

I headed along to the store in Leigh, Wigan, to see just what's available and was surprised to see just how many different products are included in the deal.

It was close to closing time, so there were obviously lots of empty spaces from people snapping up the deal during the day, but there was still plenty left to choose from.

For the main there's a wide choice including sandwiches, wraps, salads, sushi and sub rolls. You can get Ginsters slices too, like the Steak Slice or Cheese & Onion.

Snack-wise there's all sorts to choose from, with savoury options like Peperami Snacks, Fridge Raiders, scotch eggs, houmous dips and Dairylea Lunchers.

And there are loads of big brand crisps and sweet treats available too, including Pringles, McCoys, Mini Cheddars, Cadbury, Nestle, Haribo and more. Sweet snacks from the fridge include everything from Nomadic Oat Clusters and Muller Rice, to Cadbury Split Pots and Oreo Fresh Milk Snacks.

The selection of drinks was way bigger than I expected. The fridges were packed full of every drink you could think of - from the favourites like Coke, Pepsi, Fanta and 7UP, to Vimto, Oasis, Capri-Sun and J20.

You can get milkshakes too, like Yazoo and Frijj, as well as Juice Burst, smoothies and even bottles of Starbucks Frappuccinos.

We picked up a selection to try including a chicken and bacon pasta salad, the chicken tikka wrap, a chicken and bacon sub roll and a Ginsters Steak Slice.

Portion sizes are all generous, there was plenty of filling on the roll and wrap (although admittedly the roll would have been tastier with a bit more mayonnaise) and a decent amount of meat with the pasta salad. There were no complaints from the kids, who demolished most of it, leaving me to enjoy the salad and sample bits of the rest.

And they were obviously impressed with the chosen snacks too, but who doesn't love chocolate or Pringles?

I have to say I was mightily impressed overall and, for £3 a pop, you really can't complain about either the quality or the choice on offer here.

Kyle Storey, head of chilled and frozen at Poundland, said its mission 'has always been to provide our customers with the best possible value, without compromising on taste or quality'.

He said: "With our new meal deal, we're not only offering an unbeatable price, but also ensuring that everyone can access a delicious and satisfying meal without the need for a plastic loyalty card."

The Grab A Bite meal deal is available in Poundland's 800-plus stores.
