The Power stars Halle Bush and Heather Agyepong have spoken about the “empowering” nature of working with female creators.

The Amazon Prime Video series is set in a world where all teenage girls develop the ability to electrocute people, with their actions leading to a reawakening in older women.

Based on Naomi Alderman’s 2016 novel, the show boasts a four-woman creative team, with the series being developed by Alderman, Raelle Tucker, Claire Wilson and Sarah Quintrell.

Bush and Agyepong, who play Allie and Ndudi respectively, praised the on-set environment of the show in an exclusive interview with Digital Spy, with the former saying: “I think it was very important for this to be just written [and] directed by women – it just made it feel more empowering.

“It made me feel a lot more safe on set and [I was able] to voice out my opinion more,” she continued. “I could have this idea for Allie and that if I were to tell the writers or the directors, I knew they wouldn't immediately shut me down. We could all relate to each other in such a beautiful way.”

Agyepong echoed the sentiments of her castmate, adding: “I didn't have to explain myself a lot, actually. There's a common ground sometimes talking to the writers and directors.

Particularly for me, there was a diversity in the writers for Ndudi’s [storyline],” she revealed. “There was a British Nigerian writer who's very much embedded in the telling of the story, so it felt really authentic – that felt quite special about the project for sure.”

Whilst the future of the show is currently up in the air, lead stars Toni Collette and John Leguizamo recently expressed their wish for more episodes, with the former telling Digital Spy: “[The series is] like a mountain and we're skimming the top of it. It's a big subject. So I think there are so many ways of exploring it.”

The Power is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
