A pre-inquest review has opened into the death of a suspected murderer accused of killing a Crufts dog breeder.

Alex Verdu Munoz, an Argentinian national, died in custody at Strangeways prison in Manchester on May 15, 2022 while awaiting trial.

The 26-year-old had been charged with murdering Valerie Freer, 68, who died after being stabbed in the neck outside her home in the village of Whittington, near Lichfield, on February 24, 2022. She was found on her driveway by paramedics at around 10.53am.

An inquest into Mrs Freer’s death on December 13 2022, heard her husband Derek Freer left their home to take their dogs for a walk for around 40 minutes on the morning of February 24, 2022.

When he returned he found Mrs Freer - who he had been married to for 46 years - in a pool of blood. She had endured 16 stab wounds, 10 puncture wounds and scratches around the neck, according to her post-mortem.

DI Ian Fitzgerald, of Staffordshire Police, the senior investigator on the case, told South Staffordshire Coroner's Court, the ambulance arrived within minutes, but sadly she had already died from her injuries.

At the time of her death, Mrs Freer's family released a statement saying: "Words cannot even begin to describe how truly devastated we are to have lost our wonderful Val. Her illuminating smile and infectious laughter would light up any room.

"An incredibly beautiful lady both inside and out, she was always so loving and caring to all those around her. Val is loved infinitely by family and friends around the world. She will be hugely missed, remaining forever in our hearts."

Munoz also faced charges of aggravated burglary, burglary, possession of a bladed article and dangerous driving. At the time of his death Greater Manchester Police said it was not being treated as suspicious. No further details have been revealed.

At a brief hearing at Manchester Coroner's Court today (April 29), area coroner Paul Appleton adjourned proceedings until later this year when a hearing is set to take place. A date has not yet been set, although the inquest is expected to last five days and will be heard by a jury.
