When it comes to bringing her loved ones together, Jenna Dewan is learning as she goes and grows.

While chatting with PEOPLE about her partnership with Crate & Kids, the pregnant star, 43, talked about curating her new baby nursery with the home brand as well as managing her blended family life between her kids: 4-year-old son Callum and her baby on the way with fiancé Steve Kazee, plus her 11-year-old daughter Everly, whom she shares with ex-husband Channing Tatum.

"Like everything else in life, you learn as you go. You shift and evolve and you adapt to how life is presenting itself to you," the Step Up star tells PEOPLE of her co-parenting philosophy. "That includes getting the new normal of a blended family."

No matter the circumstances, Dewan maintains that her children are always the top priority: "Kids always come first. How you feel about your kids. How you treat your kids. Kids always come first above everything else," she shares.

Dewan's laser focus on family has been key as she and Kazee prepare to bring another baby into the mix. Luckily, both of her kids are already on board with big sibling duties. The proud mom says her daughter is especially excited about their family's newest addition.

"[Everly] is the oldest, so she gets it the most. And I think because she was still so young when Callum was born, this will be really special for her," Dewan says of her daughter Everly. "She's just going to have more responsibility, but she's also going to have more wisdom to her."

The actress is also re-entering motherhood with a few more years of insight, and she's glad to be welcoming another baby in her 40s.

"It feels like I always knew that this would probably be the path for me, even as a kid. I think I knew life got better as I got older if that makes sense," Dewan tells PEOPLE. "I'd never understood that like, 'Oh no, it's all over once we get older.'"

She continues, "Life's only shown me that the more time I have in this life, the more I've learned, the better experiences I've had. Everything just kind of feels better."

Dewan — whose show The Rookie will return for its seventh season — isn't planning to stop working when her newborn arrives, though she expects to make some "lifestyle and home changes" in order to accommodate her third addition.

"There's three schedules versus two, and I do work full-time, and it's a giant moving calendar at all times," she says, adding, "But I have an incredible partner and I've gotten it a little bit down now, how to multitask with schedules. You have to be okay to be open and ask for help when you need it."

And even when the going gets tough and schedules pile on, the professional dancer can lean on her kids to keep her spirits high and vitalized.

"I do think there's something about being in the energy of kids and their lives," she explains. "Just everything you go through while raising kids keeps you in a youthful place because that's what you're around. That's your life."
