Welcome to Derry, the upcoming prequel to It, has unveiled its release window with a first look.

The series will serve as an origin story for Pennywise the Clown, with the action taking place in the titular town during the 1960s.

Details pertaining to plot and a release date have been scarce so far, but HBO has now revealed that the series will premiere in 2025, meaning fans still have a while to wait.

The trailer included some brief footage, with the iconic red balloon floating in the air as an unsuspecting individual is plunged into the water by an unknown being (it’s probably Pennywise).

Whilst the series will depict the beginnings of the villainous clown, it was revealed that Bill Skarsgård would not be reprising his role from the films; the cast thus far includes Taylour Paige, Jovan Adepo, James Remar, Chris Chalk, Stephen Rider and Madeleine Stowe.

The series has received the blessing of author Stephen King, with the writer saying in a statement: “I'm excited that the story of Derry, Maine's most haunted city, is continuing, and I'm glad Andy Muschietti is going to be overseeing the frightening festivities, along with a brain trust including his talented sister, Barbara. Red balloons all around!”

Muschietti, who directed both instalments in the recent film adaptation, added: “As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of Stephen King's It until the thick paperback fell to pieces.

“It is an epic story that contains multitudes, far beyond what we could explore in our It movies. We can't wait to share the depths of Steve's novel, in all its heart, humour, humanity, and horror.”

Welcome to Derry will air on Max in 2025.
