Arsonists have been targeting a pretty woodland walk in Nuneaton, putting 'themselves, wildlife and businesses in danger'. That is according to Nuneaton Fire Station crews who faced the small fires set along the Weddington Walk.

"Branches are snapped from trees in the area, to fuel these fires," they said. "We would like to remind people this is dangerous for those involved, children and local wildlife nevermind the environment and businesses if these fires were to inadvertently spread to fields and crops, outbuildings not to mention it is illegal."

They explained that not only do the fires pose danger, they also divert precious resources away from other emergencies. In the past week alone, the local crews have spent hours at serious incidents including the huge lorry fire on the M42.

"While we are attending these small fires our resources are detained at them sometimes as they are some travel distance from water supplies, making it difficult for crews to extinguish," the team said. "While we are tied up here, someone could be in danger and have to wait for an appliance 20 minutes away. Seconds count in an emergency."

They went on to add that details of the recent spate of fires along the Weddington Walk have been passed onto Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service's arson reduction department, who will liaise with the police.
