Primary school student's orchestral suite to be performed at concert

A PRIMARY school pupil's five-movement orchestral suite will be premiered at a church concert amongst renditions of Leonard Bernstein and Max Bruch.

St. John the Baptist Church in Wellington will host Somerset Youth Orchestra on Tuesday, July 23, for the debut of the piece penned by Milverton Primary School pupil Elliott Coles.

Elliott's composition, 'Galactic Procession', was written as part of an initiative called 'On the Record' run by Actiontrack Performance Company in partnership with the county music education hub.

Elliott is excited to have his piece performed by the orchestra. The performance will take place at the end of their four-day summer course organised by Somerset Music.

In another first for the orchestra, conductor Andrew Sherwood will pass the baton to Louis Bennyworth, a senior orchestra member.

Louis' debut as conductor will see him leading Max Bruch's popular 'Violin Concerto No. 1'.

Mr Sherwood, who is professor of violin at Trinity-Laban Conservatoire, will take the solo violin part in this performance.

The musical evening will also include Aaron Copland's ballet score for 'Appalachian Spring', Leonard Bernstein's jazz-infused 'Overture to Candide', and 'Pluto’s Song', written by Wellington composer Julian Breeze.

The Youth Concert Band will also give an enchanting performance the following night, Wednesday, July 24.

The two performances marks the return of these groups to Wellington after some time.
