New Prime Minister and what happens next if Labour win 2024 General Election

The Labour party has been predicted to land a huge victory in the 2024 General Election and move into government.

Exit polls suggested a Labour landslide with the party on course for 410 seats and the number of Conservative MPs reduced to a record low of 131. It also forecast the Liberal Democrats on 61 seats, Reform UK on 13 and The Green Party on two.

And if the polls are correct it will mean Keir Starmer will replace Rishi Sunak as Prime Minister. The result could also be so damning for the Tories that Sunak decides to step down as leader of the Conservative Party.

But what happens once the election result is confirmed?

Once the election result is known and it is confirmed that a single party has gained enough seats to form a majority government, the next steps are as follows. The leader of the party will be invited to visit the King the following morning and invited to form a government.

The first step is for the outgoing Prime Minister to visit the King and tender their resignation. Shortly afterwards the new Prime Minister will visit the King and will be asked to form a government. They then give a public address outside 10 Downing Street.

Following their speech the new Prime Minister is greeted into Downing Street by senior political staff.

One of their first tasks is to write to the commanders of the UK's four nuclear submarines with instructions on what to do in the event of a nuclear strike. They then start to appoint their ministers over the next few days as well as beginning to move their family into no.10.
