Prince Harry took Dave Grohl a gift when he was hospitalised after breaking his leg

Dave Grohl has opened up about his unlikely friendship with Prince Harry, revealing that the 33-year-old royal hand-delivered him a useful present in hospital when he broke his leg two years ago.

The Foo Fighters’ frontman was shocked to receive the royal visit while he was recovering in London following surgery on his injured leg, which happened when he fell off the stage in Sweden back in 2015.

And Harry didn’t come empty-handed, gifting the rocker with an iPad holder, which no doubt proved useful for Dave’s long recovery time.

Speaking to BBC Breakfast, Dave recalled: “When I had my surgery in London, he was one of the first people to visit me afterwards. He brought me a gift, he brought me this pillow to put my iPad on while I was in recovery.

“He’s the sweetest… He came over and there was no entourage of anything.”

Dave went on to reveal that his children’s nanny didn’t even recognise the Prince when she brought his three children, 10-year-old Violet, seven-year-old Harper, and three-year-old Ophelia, to visit their dad.

He continued: “It’s funny, our nanny was there and she came into the room with the kids and I said, ‘This is Harry’.

“And it took her about five or six minutes before she realised it was the prince of England. He’s a very great guy.”

Dave’s Foo Fighters bandmate, Taylor Hawkins, also has fond experiences with Prince Harry, recalling the time the British royal slapped him around the face in a bid to wake him up after he complained of jet lag just before walking on stage.

Taylor explained: “I was like, ‘what was that?’ It was great, it was funny. I wore the slap with pride.

“He’s one of the boys. What a boy. It’s like Paul McCartney, once you break through the royalty, or the Beatles thing, you find they just want to hang out with the boys, like we do.”

The Foo Fighters aren’t the only celebs to have links with the Prince, with TV presenter Ant McPartlin revealing that Harry sent him a handwritten note to thank him for speaking out on depression when he checked into rehab with addiction.

Ant revealed: “I was given an envelope, It was a handwritten note from Harry sending all of his best wishes on behalf of him, William and Catherine and telling me well done for speaking out.

“Obviously he leads the Heads Together charity, so it’s something he encourages.

“I wish I’d spoken out a lot earlier. But what a great time to get that letter. Brilliant. Thanks, Haz.”
