Despite attending Royal Ascot yesterday (June 20), Prince Philip has been taken to hospital as a "precautionary measure".

The Duke of Edinburgh, who celebrated his 96th birthday earlier this month (June 10), is being treated for an infection arising from a pre-existing condition.

In a statement, a Buckingham Palace spokesman said: "The Duke of Edinburgh was admitted to King Edward VII Hospital in London last night, as a precautionary measure, for treatment of an infection arising from a pre-existing condition."

He said the Duke was "in good spirits" but "disappointed" to be missing both events.

"Her Majesty is being kept informed and will attend Royal Ascot as planned," the palace added.

Prince Charles is accompanying the Queen at today's State Opening of Parliament in Philip's place.

The news comes after the palace announced that Prince Philip will no longer undertake public engagements from autumn this year – although he may still attend public events "from time to time".

Philip took the decision "with the full support of the Queen", the palace said at the time. They also added that the Queen "will continue to carry out a full programme of official engagements with the support of the royal family".

The duke is patron, president or a member of over 780 organisations, and he will continue to be associated with them after he steps down from public life.
