Everyone in Stoke-on-Trent knows that oatcakes are the king of all foods. And it would seem that the humble dish has a Royal fan too in the shape of Prince William.

The first in line to the throne was at St George's Park near Burton for a surprise visit yesterday (June 10) to wish the England team well in the upcoming Euros ahead of the squad flying out to Germany.

In between meeting the likes of Harry Kane and Gareth Southgate, Prince William, president of the FA, met Chesterton's Aaron Ramsdale who is England's back-up goalkeeper. And he also had a quick chat with Port Vale Foundation football coach Zakh Poots.

It was during this conversation, that the Aston Villa-supporting Royal's penchant for a Staffordshire oatcake came to light. Zakh explained: "We were here and met Prince William for the 10th anniversary at St George's Park (in 2022) and we brought him oatcakes from Stoke-on-Trent. He remembered the oatcakes and said how much he had enjoyed them last time, which was fantastic."

The Royal family's love of the biscuit-like Scottish oatcake has previously been documented but it's the first time one has been known to have tucked into the Staffordshire version. Prince William is no doubt too diplomatic to reveal which one he prefers but we can all take a guess.
