Prince William Set to Have a Special Role at Prince George's Godfather's Upcoming High Society Wedding

Meanwhile, King Charles may miss the wedding of his godson the Duke of Westminster on June 7

Prince William may be the future king, but he's set to play a supporting role when a friend gets married next month.

The Prince of Wales, 41, is expected to act as an usher at the high society wedding of Hugh Grosvenor, the Duke of Westminster to Olivia Henson on June 7, according to The Telegraph.

In the U.K., ushers are close to the groom and are a typical part of a wedding. According to the Church of England, ushers are among the first to arrive at a wedding ceremony so they can help welcome guests and seat them. "Your main role is to help guests feel welcome and comfortable in the church," the church states.

Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry, played a similar role at the 2004 wedding of Hugh's sister Tamara when she wed Edward van Cutsem.

The Duke of Westminster, 33, has many connections to the royal family, including being a godfather to Prince William and Kate Middleton's eldest son, Prince George. However, The Telegraph reports that the Princess of Wales, 42, is not expected to attend the nuptials as she continues her cancer treatment.

It's unclear if 10-year-old Prince George (or his siblings, Princess Charlotte, 9, and Prince Louis, 6) will attend the wedding. Both George and Charlotte are pros at being part of the bridal party, having served as a page boy or bridesmaid at several weddings, including Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's nuptials and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's ceremony, both in 2018.

Despite being a godfather to the groom, King Charles is also not expected at the June 7 wedding, according to The Telegraph. The monarch, 75, is also undergoing cancer treatment, although he recently returned to a fuller schedule of royal duties.

According to the Sunday Times, the Duke of Westminster decided not to invite Prince Harry and Meghan to his wedding amid the royal family rift. Hugh is reportedly one of their son Prince Archie’s godfathers, though the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have opted not to reveal their eldest child's godparents.

An unnamed friend of Prince William and Prince Harry was quoted in The Sunday Times this weekend as saying, “It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realizes it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding. He wanted to avoid anything overshadowing the day, especially for Olivia, and doesn’t want any awkwardness."

The Duke of Westminster recently topped The Sunday Times Rich List for the under 40s in the U.K. with a family net worth stands at $12.8 billion. He took 15th place on the overall list, dropping from the 11th spot in the 2023 rankings. Hugh inherited his father's title and wealth in 2016, making him the youngest billionaire in the U.K.

According to The Telegraph, Hugh and Olivia's wedding has a "strictly no-gifts policy."

Hugh is chair of the Grosvenor Group, an investment and real estate group that manages rural estates and supports charitable initiatives, such as investing in food and agricultural technology that is environmentally responsible and works towards a more sustainable food system. He's also Chair of the Westminster Group, which provides grants for youth outreach programs for at-risk children and works closely with groups that support families and schools in their local communities.

During a May 7 visit to Chester Cathedral to highlight causes helped by the Westminster Foundation, the Duke and future Duchess of Westminster reflected on their upcoming nuptials that will take place at the same church.

"The next time we’ll be here will be slightly more nerve-wracking," Hugh joked to the Very Rev. Tim Stratford, Dean of Chester.
