Priti Patel called into Nuneaton and issued a message to locals. In what was a low-key stop, the former home secretary met with Conservative candidate Marcus Jones.

They were in the Whitestone area of the town during a leaflet drop on Monday, June 17, and she spoke of her personal experience of how Mr Jones had championed the town. He is seeking re-election having been Nuneaton and Arley's voice in Parliament for 14 years.

She said: "Marcus has been an outstanding member of Parliament for Nuneaton, I know that because I have worked with Marcus in Parliament as well and he is a fantastic local advocate."

She went on: "And I have to say, please vote for Marcus Jones in the General Election, if you want a strong voice for Nuneaton because he is local and has always been a very strong advocate of Nuneaton and there are so many local issues where I know you have been a big champion for."

Her visit to the town was not the only one made by leading faces from the Conservative Party. Chris Heaton Harris, the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, also came to the St Nicolas area earlier this month.

But both have been less fanfared compared to visits from leading Labour Party politicians including when Labour leader Keir Starmer visited a school in Nuneaton last week. The town is fast getting lots of national attention, largely due to its bellweather status.

Former Prime Minister Lord Cameron famously said he knew the Tories had won power when the Nuneaton seat was declared in 2015. There are six people contesting the seat on July 4, including Mr Jones.

The others standing are Jodie Gosling for Labour, Keith Kondakor for the Green Party and Joy Salaja for the Liberal Democrats. Rob Howard is the Reform UK candidate and John Homer is standing for the Workers Party.
