Pro-Palestine Demonstrators Protest Arms Sales to Israel in Madrid

Hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters in Madrid, Spain, marched in solidarity on Saturday, May 18, calling on their government to break relations with Israel.

Video footage captured by Miguel Candela on Saturday shows protesters holding banners denouncing “genocide” while another group held a blimp that read, “End arms sales to Israel.”

Transport Minister Oscar Puente released a statement on X on Thursday, May 16, announcing that the foreign ministry refused entry to an Israel-bound ship carrying arms at the southeastern port of Cartagena. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares said that this will be a consistent policy, according to Euronews.

Local reports said protesters accused Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez of “playing both sides” regarding the recognition of a Palestinian state.

Prime Minister Sanchez stated on Friday, May 17, that Madrid would only recognize a Palestinian state in a joint action with other countries, according to Reuters. Credit: Miguel Candela via Storyful
