Pro-Palestine Protesters Chant in Front of Police Outside Columbia University
Pro-Palestine protesters were chanting slogans in front of police forces outside Columbia University in New York City on the evening of Tuesday, April 23.
Footage filmed by Michela Demelas shows protesters chanting “Palestine will never die” and other phrases in front of helmeted police officers outside Columbia University on Tuesday night.
According to news reports, the midnight deadline that had been set for negotiations between the student protesters and the university expired with no announced resolution.
President of Columbia University Minouche Shafik said on Tuesday that if discussions with the protesters wouldn’t prove successful she would “have to consider alternative options for clearing the West Lawn and restoring calm to campus so that students can complete the term and graduate.”
Police were at the scene, as visible in this footage, but there were no reports of police forces entering the encampment overnight.
Columbia canceled all in-person classes on Monday due to the ongoing encampment, an op-ed attributed to untenured faculty in Columbia’s newspaper expressed solidarity with student protesters, and dozens of teachers reportedly walked out on Monday. Credit: Michela Demelas via Storyful
