Pro-Palestine Protesters Occupy Building at Rhode Island School of Design

A group of students protesting in solidarity with Palestinians occupied an administration building at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence on Monday night, May 6, and reportedly barricaded themselves inside.

Footage filmed by Tom Li for The Brown Daily Herald shows protesters rallying outside and inside the building at 20 Washington Place, also known as Prov-Wash, late on Monday evening into early Tuesday.

The protesters, organized by RISD Students for Justice in Palestine, were given an 8 am deadline on Tuesday to leave the building, after meeting with the college president and provost for several hours, The Brown Daily Herald reported.

RISD Students for Justice in Palestine published their aims and demands from the university on Instagram, which included “divestment from companies facilitating Israeli occupation and genocide in Palestine.”

The protesters said they renamed the building “Fathi Ghaben Place” in honor of the Palestinian artist who died after being prevented from leaving Gaza to get medical treatment. Credit: Tom Li / The Brown Daily Herald via Storyful
