Profits Up For Angry Birds Maker Rovio Amid Plans For Movie Sequel

The makers of the Angry Birds movie, Rovio Entertainment Ltd, has revealed it made a profit in the first half of 2016 a year after losses saw it shed a third of its staff.

The Finnish mobile game and animation maker reported adjusted operating profit of €5.7m (£4.8m) in the six months to June, compared to a loss of €10m (£8.5m) in 2015, which led the company to change its CEO.

The figures do not include profits from its successful 3D Angry Birds movie which has earned more than $347m (£262m) at the box office worldwide since its release in May.

Rovio's gaming business has reported year-on-year revenue growth of 24%.

"With (Other OTC: WWTH - news) the excellent performance of our games portfolio and the fantastic movie, the Angry Birds brand is flying high and we are seeing positive EBIT and cash flow development, while fulfilling our mission to create world class entertainment," said chief executive Kati Levoranta.

"We currently have several exciting new games and other projects in development, including new IP, and we have started planning the sequel to The Angry Birds Movie," she added.

Angry Birds is the most downloaded series game of all time.
