A Plymouth family who run a popular ice cream shop have now extended their business to proper local fish and chips. Seafront spot Ocean City Coffee & Ice Cream on Plymouth Hoe already draws in holidaymakers and locals with their reasonably priced sweet treats - but now you can enjoy a savoury summertime favourite there too.

The cafe (Ocean City Coffee & Ice Cream) opened in 2019, but recently in May the family team opened a fish and chip shack just opposite. The owners, husband and wife, Keith and Ann Stephens wanted to offer “proper local” fish and chips in one of the most stunning parts of Plymouth - and it’s really taken off.

Situated with a backdrop view of Plymouth Sound, on a sunny day, anyone queuing for fish and chips in this spot will feel holiday vibes - even if you’re a local. Fish is sourced locally, which is an important aspect of the new business for the Stephens family.

Keith said: “I feel we’ve got to support our local fishermen so we always source from Rex Down Fish Merchants Ltd or Westcountry Seafoods. That’s what tourists and locals want to eat too.

“We set this up as we had so many people asking in the cafe for fish and chips. It's the only spot on Plymouth Hoe seafront where you can get fish and chips and it’s really taken off. We get a lot of locals trying them and our ice cream and coffee shop is popular with people living nearby too.”

Much more than an ice cream shop, the cafe opposite the fish and chip kiosk - Ocean City Coffee & Ice Cream - offers tasty breakfasts and lunchtime salads and visitors describe the place as a “little gem”. It’s built up a reputation for its generously sized portions at reasonable prices.

There’s some unusual ice cream flavours to try (if you’ve got room after fish and chips) and the selection changes weekly. Blue or pink bubble-gum, rhubarb and custard or Biscoff are just some of the ice creams on offer here.

But one of the most popular ice cream choices is the hugely generous strawberries and cream. Locally sourced clotted cream alongside vanilla ice cream with strawberries too - and it costs just £2.20.

Customer, Philip Palmer reviewed Ocean City Coffee & Ice Cream on TripAdvisor, he wrote: “The ice creams are the best in Plymouth and probably the cheapest, too! The staff and management are friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much for them. Next to the play park at West Hoe. Go on down and see them. You'll be in for an ice cream treat.”
