PS5 UK stock - live: Amazon restock sells out, plus Game console news

Who could restock the elusive console today? (The Independent)
Who could restock the elusive console today? (The Independent)

UPDATE: The PS5 is out of stock at Amazon after also selling out at BT, Currys, EE, PlayStation Direct, Game, Very and Littlewoods. Read on for more information.

It has now been over a year since Sony’s latest console, the PlayStation 5 (PS5), first arrived in the UK. But supply problems and a worldwide semiconductor shortage sparked by the coronavirus pandemic have caused the production of the device to slow to a crawl. New stock is still tricky to find and, when it does appear, the PS5 sells out quickly, both online and in-store.

It’s your last chance to bag a console before Christmas, and it looks like retailers are pulling out all the stops to ensure one is sat underneath the tree this year. So far this month, we’ve seen restocks at Smyths Toys, Currys, PlayStation Direct and ShopTo. And last week, we saw a monstrous 13 restocks from Very, Littlewoods, Currys, Studio, ShopTo, Argos, EE and BT.

If you’re still on the lookout for a PS5, you’ve come to the right place. Our liveblog is on hand to give you the latest insight on restocks from all major UK retailers, both online and in-store, as well as providing details on rumoured releases, plus the latest PS5 games and accessories to snap up.

Live blog signing off

17:20 , Alistair Charlton

And with that rather frantic finale, we’re signing off for another day. What began as a quiet Wednesday perked up with the drip-feeding of PS5 consoles into Game branches across the UK, then ended with a PS5 disc edition restock at Amazon. There’s a chance that Amazon will restock the PS5 digital edition this evening too, but we’re not certain about that just yet.

In any case, we’ll be back tomorrow for another day of PS5 hunting.

Amazon is now sold out

17:17 , Alistair Charlton

As expected, Amazon’s PS5 restock didn’t last long, and the console is once again listed as unavailable. This was unusual timing from Amazon, with restocks usually landing earlier in the day.

We’re now seeing speculation that the PS5 digital edition will appear on Amazon next, but since this drop is being described as “shortly maybe” we’re not holding our breath just yet.

The PS5 is now available at Amazon

16:55 , Alistair Charlton

It’s a bit late in the day, but Amazon is having a PS5 restock right now! Both the PS5 digital edition and PS5 disc edition are available, and what’s more they can be bought without a bundle, so just the console on its own for its regular retail price.

It looks like these consoles are only for Prime members, so you’ll need to sign up to Prime before trying to purchase your console.

Need some new wireless earbuds?

Earbuds might not be great for gaming, but that doesn’t stop us from using them while playing a bit of Fortnite. We’ve tested a range of the latest models in our review of the best wireless earbuds, primarily focusing on audio quality, but also checking out the various features and styles currently on the market.

Whether you’re a style-conscious pop lover, a fitness fan on a budget or a blasphemous earbud-wearing gamer, there’s something for everyone in our earbuds guide. Our top pick are the Sennheiser CX 400BT true wireless earbuds. Our reviewer said that they were a “top-notch” pair for those who don’t want to splash.

How big is the PS5?

16:00 , Alistair Charlton

Not as strange a question as you might think, because the PS5 is massive. It’s often an easy joke to say how big the next generation of game consoles are, ever since the chunky original Xbox arrived, followed by the even bigger PS4.

But, while the Xbox series X is also rather large, it’s the PS5 that is least likely to fit under your television. The digital edition is slightly slimmer, due to not having a disc drive, but both consoles are equally tall when stood on end.

They are 390mm tall and 260mm deep, while the disc edition is 104mm thick and the digital edition is 92mm. Both consoles are intended to be stood upright, but also come with a plastic stand to help them rest on their side – likely the only way most buyers will fit the console under their TV.

If handheld gaming is more your thing then check out our review of the new Nintendo Switch OLED. The console features an OLED display for the first time, which is larger than before and produces punchier colours and deeper blacks. There’s also a redesigned kickstand and double the internal storage of its predecessor.

Our reviewer said of the £309.99 console: “The larger display is fantastic and playing games in handheld mode is an absolute joy. The kickstand feels so solid and makes us never want to look at that little toggle on the back of the original Switch ever again...this is absolutely the best version of the console yet.”

What’s the difference between the two models of PS5?

15:02 , Alistair Charlton

 (Sony)
(Sony)

Sony sells two versions of the PS5. These are known as the disc edition and the digital edition. They have the same performance, design and technical specifications, but the digital edition does not have a disc drive. This means games can only be played by downloading them, and obviously there’s no way to play DVDs or Blu-ray movies.

The digital edition is also cheaper, at £359.99 compared to £449.99 for the disc edition.

How to buy an Xbox series X

14:03 , Alistair Charlton

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

The Xbox series X is just as hard to buy as the PS5. In fact, in recent weeks restocks of the Microsoft console have been even rarer. Thankfully, the IndyBest team is on hand, with a live blog bringing you all of the latest news on Xbox restocks right across the UK.

If you’re in the market for an Xbox series X, head over to our live blog for your best chance of securing a console. As ever, the cheaper, smaller and less powerful Xbox series S is in stock at Game, Very, Argos and most other retailers, ready to buy right now.

Can you play PS4 games on PS5?

13:01 , Alistair Charlton

You sure can! The overwhelming majority of the PS4 games you own are playable on the PS5. You’ll be able to download any games you bought through the PlayStation store on your PS4 and play them on the next-gen console.

If you’ve got the disc edition of the PS5, you’ll also be able to insert your PS4 discs into it and play them that way, too. Obviously, because there’s no physical disc slot on the digital edition of the console, you won’t be able to play any PS4 discs you own. We’ve compiled together a list of our favourite PS4 games, and most of them have dropped in price since the PS5 came out.

Can you get a VPN on the PS5?

12:06 , Alistair Charlton

While Sony doesn’t allow any VPN apps like NordVPN or ExpressVPN to be downloaded from the PlayStation Store (VPNs aren’t supported on the platform at all), there’s still a way to use a VPN on the PS5 if you want to stream geo-restricted content.

We’d recommend getting a VPN which has the Smart DNS feature. It’s a service provided by a number of VPN firms, including NordVPN, allowing you to spoof your location on devices that don’t have VPN support. You can read our round-up of the best VPNs for more information.

BT is now sold out

11:33 , Alistair Charlton

BT has again run out of PS5 stock. This restock lasted much longer than most, spanning a couple of days, but the online store now says stock has run dry. These PS5 consoles and bundles were available through BT’s code system, where BT customers are sent an access code that can be used to put a console into their online basket.

Is Smyths Toys due a PS5 restock?

10:59 , Alistair Charlton

Yes, but the retailer is being pretty vague for now. The Smyths Toys website currently says the PS5 is out of stock, and that more consoles are expected “TBC 2021”. The site usually says the month, but this being December it makes sense to just say the year.

Still, this doesn’t fill us with hope that new consoles will arrive in time for Christmas. We hope to be proved wrong...

For those keeping count, Smyths last had PS5 stock online on 2 December. There are also no consoles available at any Smyths Toys stores at the moment either.

How to get a PS5 voucher code from BT

10:30 , Alistair Charlton

BT is giving its customers a helping hand when it comes to securing a PS5. Instead of throwing open the virtual doors and dealing with a stampede like other retailers, BT sends out unique voucher codes to its customers.

If you are a BT TV customer, for example, or subscribe to BT Sport, you can apply to receive a PS5 voucher code. These are emailed out sporadically and can be used to access a PS5 next time the BT store has a restock. You still have to pay the regular price, of course, but this system is a neat way of rewarding BT customers and giving them a better chance of securing a console.

More Game stores have PS5 stock right now

10:28 , Alistair Charlton

We’re just seeing news that several more branches of Game now have PS5 consoles in stock. These stores are:

  • Braintree

  • Plymouth

  • Aberystwyth

  • Worksop

  • Solihull

  • Bournemouth

  • Gloucester

  • Worcester

  • Hereford

  • Monks Cross

  • Cyfarthfa Retail Park

  • Lincoln

You’ll need to be quick though, as these in-store consoles tend to sell out very quickly, and are usually offered on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system.

We will be updating the list in this post throughout today.

The best 4K TV for your new PS5

10:01 , Alistair Charlton

While we wait for the next PS5 restock, it’s time to think about upgrading your television. The PS5 outputs video at 4K resolution and can even handle games running at 120 frames per second. That’s something not all TVs can manage, so if you want to see your new console running at its best, a new TV could be worthwhile.

We’ve rounded up nine of the best 4K TVs available right now, from manufacturers including Samsung, LG, Sony and Panasonic, among others. And the great news is you don’t need to spend a fortune to get a great 4K television – prices of our favourites start at under £400.

The PS5 is still in stock at BT

09:45 , Alistair Charlton

BT still has PS5 consoles in stock and ready to buy right now – but there is a slight catch, as only BT customers who have been emailed an access code by BT itself can buy these consoles.

The console on its own is showing as out-of-stock now, but the PS5 disc edition with an extra controller is still available for £508.99.

When did Argos last have a restock?

09:28 , Alistair Charlton

Argos is a strange one, and we’re not just talking about those little pens and the laminated catalogue. The website will often claim the PS5 is in stock, but then tell shoppers the console isn’t available in their area. This can be frustrating, to say the least.

The retailer last had some online stock on 10 December, and prior to that we saw consoles available on 20 and 27 October, and 18 November. In-between those dates we’ve seen the odd console appear on shelves for walk-in customers too, but that stock is difficult to keep track of.

We hope to see another restock at Argos before Christmas, but it’s tricky to say if this will mean consoles for everyone, UK-wide, or if there will be geographical restrictions.

When did Amazon last have a PS5 restock?

09:00 , Alistair Charlton

We’re hoping to see a PS5 restock from Amazon today. It’s been quite a while since we last saw consoles available at the retail giant, way back on 17 November.

Amazon only tends to restock the PS5 once or twice a month. We saw two restocks in July, followed by one in August, two in September, one in October and the aforementioned one in November. As such, Amazon’s next PS5 restock could well be the last one before Christmas and its final replenishment of the year. No pressure...

Can you buy a PS5 on the high street?

08:46 , Alistair Charlton

Yes, but stock is currently very limited. As mentioned in our previous post, four branches of Game currently have a handful of PS5 consoles available for walk-in customers. This is happening more often recently, but we’re still mostly talking about very small numbers of consoles, which sell out quickly on a first-come, first-served basis.

Game stores each have their own Twitter account, which they use to say when PS5 (and Xbox series X) stock is available, and there’s a Twitter list here that puts all of the tweets of those accounts into one place.

Smyths Toys also has occasional in-store stock available. The retailer’s website has a tool for checking all of its UK stores at once, and we sometimes see PS5 consoles available this way. As with Game, they are offered to walk-in customers on a first-come, first-served basis.

PS5 stock available at some Game stores

08:36 , Alistair Charlton

We’ve just spotted news of a handful of PS5 consoles in stock at Game stores. Four of the retailer’s shops just tweeted to say they have limited PS5 stock available right now – those stores are the Game branches of Hereford, Gloucester, Worcester, and the House of Fraser in Guildford. These consoles are usually sold on a first-come, first-served basis, so you’ll have to be quick to secure one.

Who else might restock before Christmas?

08:23 , Alistair Charlton

After such a big restock across multiple retailers yesterday, you will rightly be wondering over your cornflakes this morning, what might happen next? Well, we hear Amazon could have a restock today. Beyond that, Argos might have another restock in time for Christmas, along with AO, Smyths Toys and John Lewis.

Amazon might have a PS5 restock today

08:13 , Alistair Charlton

You might expect things to quieten down after such a busy one on Tuesday. But not so, as we’re hopeful for a restock at Amazon today. This could well be the retail giant’s final PS5 restock before Christmas, so you’d better be quick.

Good morning!

08:11 , Alistair Charlton

Good morning and welcome back to another day of PS5 hunting. Wow, it was a busy one yesterday! Just as we were hoping retailers would treat us in the run-up to Christmas, they delivered. Yesterday we saw PS5 restocks at EE, BT, Currys, PlayStation Direct, Game, Very and Littlewoods.

As ever, stay tuned to this live blog for all of the latest PS5 restocking news as soon as we have it.

Amazon PS5 stock drop predictions

Tuesday 14 December 2021 13:20 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

What a morning! Seven whole drops simultaneously – we’ve never seen that happen before in all our years (one to be exact) of stock tracking. If you’re still looking to bag a console before Christmas, your best bet is Amazon, who could potentially restock tomorrow morning.

The retailer has a very strict restock pattern for its drops – it pretty much only ever restocks on a Wednesday. We didn’t get a drop last week, meaning that it’s very likely the retailer is going to have a restock tomorrow on 15 December, just in time for Christmas.

The retailer hasn’t had a drop since 17 November, so it’s been a pretty long while. You’ll need to be an Amazon Prime subscriber to buy the console. If you aren’t already signed up, you can get a 30-day free trial and then just cancel after you cop your PlayStation.

Face plates are finally coming to the PS5

Tuesday 14 December 2021 12:35 , Alex Lee

Sony will finally let people change the colour of their PS5 with official face plates. The new cases come in a range of options, including black, purple, red, blue and pink.

It means that the existing off white outsides of the PlayStation 5 can simply be popped off and have the new one put in its place, Sony said. Have a read of our news piece below for more information:

Game PS5 stock sells out

Tuesday 14 December 2021 11:11 , Alex Lee

The PS5 has now sold out at Game, but it could restock again later this afternoon. The retailer frequently drops a second batch of consoles in the PM whenever it has an AM drop.

The afternoon drop is usually made up of cancelled orders from the AM restock. We’ll let you know if another one takes place. Game is your best bet if you want to secure a console before Christmas.

Which retailers are easiest to secure PS5 stock from?

Tuesday 14 December 2021 10:38 , Alex Lee

 (The Independent)
(The Independent)

With so many retailers currently selling the PS5, you might be feeling a little overwhelmed and unsure which queue to keep an eye on. Here’s how we’d do it:

Consoles purchased from BT, EE, Game and PlayStation Direct will all arrive before Christmas. So, if the PS5 is a present for a loved one – opt for those retailers. BT and EE should be the easiest to secure stock from because they are both exclusive drops – meaning only BT and EE customers can order from their stores.

If you don’t mind waiting until after Christmas, Very and Littlewoods are also fairly easy to secure stock from. Littlewoods does over-inflate its prices, however. Both retailers will dispatch the console on 31 December.

PS Direct stock is now live

Tuesday 14 December 2021 10:08 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is now in stock at PlayStation Direct. There is a waiting room at the moment, so you’ve still got time to get in there before the buying gets started.

Luckily, it’s not first come first serve like a lot of other retailers. You get given a random unique ID in the waiting room, meaning you don’t know what position in the queue you’ll be in when the consoles drop. Take that, scalpers!

EE PS5 stock is now live via add to plan

Tuesday 14 December 2021 09:58 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is now in stock at EE! To get the console, you need to be an EE pay monthly customer and it’s only available via EE’s Add to Plan service, which you will pay over 11 months interest-free. You also have to pay £10 upfront.

You can either get a standalone PS5 disc edition console for £40 a month (Ee.com); a PS5 with an additional dualsense controller for £45 a month (Ee.com), or a PS5 disc edition console with an additional dualsense Controller and a 12-month PS Plus subscription for £50 a month (Ee.com) – all spread out across 11 months.

Buy now from EE

In previous EE drops, the website has been a bit glitchy and hasn’t shown the console as being in stock. If that happens, we’d recommend trying to buy the console through the My EE app instead.

  • In the EE app, open the hamburger menu and hit ‘plans & add -ons’

  • Toggle add-ons and hit ‘Get more add-ons’

  • Scroll down to ‘Accessories’

  • Tap on ’Shop’

The PS5 is now in stock at Game

Tuesday 14 December 2021 09:39 , Alex Lee

SOUND THE ALARM! The PS5 is now in stock at Game.

The cheapest disc edition bundle comes with an additional controller and a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (£561.97, Game.co.uk).

Other highlights include the same PS5 bundle, except with Demon’s Souls (£594.96, Game.co.uk) and a disc edition console with a second dualsense controller, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart and Fifa 22 for £644.96 (Game.co.uk)

The PS5 is also in stock at Littlewoods

Tuesday 14 December 2021 09:19 , Alex Lee

The PS5 is also in stock at Littlewoods, but as usual, the retailer has heavily inflated its prices. Stock will last quite a while, but we’d recommend purchasing a console from one of the other retailers in the posts below.

Littlewoods is selling the disc edition for £589.99 – that’s well over the recommended retail price, but we’ll let you make the decision on whether to buy it from the retailer.

Game PS5 stock confirmed to drop this morning

Tuesday 14 December 2021 08:53 , Alex Lee

Just as predicted, the PS5 will be going live at Game this morning. Expect the console bundles to drop at around 10am. Our top tip, as always, is to opt for a bundle with the T-shirt or the cap – these sell out the slowest.

All priority insured deliveries will be shipped by 16 December, with standard deliveries shipping by 20 December – all in time for Christmas!

The PS5 is set to drop at EE this morning

Tuesday 14 December 2021 08:30 , Alex Lee

EE is getting ready to release some more standalone disc edition consoles and bundles this morning. As usual, you’ll need to be an EE pay monthly customer, and the consoles will only be available via the mobile network’s add to plan service.

We should be seeing a restock take place around 10am this morning. We’ll let you know the second stock goes live.

Who could restock the PS5 today?

Tuesday 14 December 2021 08:15 , Alex Lee

Gooooood morning PS5 hunters and welcome to another day of PS5 stock tracking action! For those of you who weren’t around yesterday and missed the BT drop, stock is still live at the retailer. You’ll need to be a BT Broadband, BT Sports or BT TV customer to get an access code from MyBT.

All righty! We’re closing up the blog for the evening. As expected, the PS5 is still in stock at BT at the time of writing, so if you’re on BT Broadband, have BT Sports or a BT TV package, make sure to order a console up today. It’s likely that the retailer will remove the console from its website later this evening.

Scuf PS5 controllers sold out within three hours

Monday 13 December 2021 15:50 , Alex Lee

The Scuf PS5 controllers have finally been released! And guess what? They sold out within three hours. More drops of the controllers (yes, we can’t believe we’re typing that either) are expected in the coming weeks.

Each of the controllers feature removable back control paddles, which can be configured on the go, and they all work with Sony’s dualsense technology – so you’ll still feel the game in your hands. You can sign up for stock updates on Scuf’s website.

Why is it so hard to buy a PS5?

Monday 13 December 2021 15:00 , Alex Lee

If you’re joining us here on the blog today, you know exactly how difficult the PS5 is to secure – gold dust for gamers, some would say. And while the stock situation has definitely improved this December, the console still sells out within minutes.

But why? For one, it was released in the middle of a global pandemic, and the Covid-19 crisis caused much of the manufacturing industry to shut down. Secondly – chips! Not the tasty kind, but the ones which power most electricals are also in short supply right now.

If you want to read more about the pandemic’s effect on supply and distribution, check out our explainer below:

This is why it’s so hard to buy a PS5 right now

Could Asda PS5 stock drop this week?

Monday 13 December 2021 14:10 , Alex Lee

Asda hasn’t had a PS5 restock in over a month, with the retailer last dropping consoles on 9 November. It is well due a drop, but we don’t have a clear idea of when one might happen.

The retailer has dropped stock every single day of the week, except Friday, so it’s hard to tell when another restock could take place. Stock does always drop around 8am, however, so that’s a good time to check in on the retailer’s website. The listing is currently removed from the site, but it should populate on this page when it comes back in stock.

PS5 price: How much does the PS5 cost?

Monday 13 December 2021 13:20 , Alex Lee

 (Sony)
(Sony)

The PS5 disc edition usually costs £449.99 – sometimes without the extra 99p in the case of BT, while the PS5 digital edition is cheaper at £349.99.

The standard PS5 is the exact same price as the Xbox series X – which is also conveniently also out of stock at most retailers. But the Xbox series s (the all-digital edition of the Xbox series x) is cheaper than the PS5 digital edition, costing just £249. If you want more information on the differences, you can read our comparison of the Xbox series X and PS5.

A number of retailers, including Game, Very, ShopTo and more are selling the PS5 bundled with games and other PS5 accessories as well. This inflates the price, but also deters those pesky scalpers.

Sony PS5 headset review

Monday 13 December 2021 10:30 , Alex Lee

You can either get the standalone disc edition console for £449 (Bt.com) or one of three bundles. The most expensive bundle comes with an extra controller and a pulse 3D wireless headset (£598.99, Bt.com). Umming and arring about the headset? Don’t – it’s one of our faves.

 (Sony)
(Sony)

“There’s no shortage of gaming headset options out there but the PlayStation 5 pulse 3D wireless headset is a little bit special,” our writer said in their round-up of the best PS5 accessories. “Made with certain PlayStation 5 games in mind, its 3D audio means you can feel fully immersed in the experience, feeling like things are truly happening all around you.”

When could Game PS5 stock drop?

Last week, Game updated its PS5 bundles page with new release dates of 20 December. These release dates are essentially dispatch dates, with drops taking place up to a week and a half in advance. The drops usually take place on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Our hunch is that the PS5 will drop at Game tomorrow, so you should hopefully be able to get your console delivered in time for Christmas if you secure one from the retailer.

There are a whopping 35 disc edition bundles on Game’s website currently, but the digital bundles have seemingly been removed from the page.

How does the BT PS5 access code restock work?

BT used to let any old Jim sign up to buy a PS5 console from the BT Store, but since October, the retailer has reserved the PS5 for BT customers exclusively.

If you are a BT Broadband or TV customer, or subscribe to BT Sport, you can apply to receive a PS5 access code. You now need to enter in your BT account number – previously, anyone could enter their email address and apply.

Access codes are emailed out sporadically and can be used to buy a PS5 next time the BT store has a restock. You can still buy a console even if you don’t sign up to the email list, you just won’t be alerted about any drops in advance.

You still have to pay the regular price, of course, but this system is a neat way of rewarding BT customers and giving them a better chance of securing a console.

BT PS5 stock is set to drop this morning

First up on the menu this week is BT, who apparently still hasn’t sold out of its allocation of consoles yet, despite having a massive three drops last week.

The retailer is set to drop the PS5 from 9am onwards, with consoles usually remaining in stock the whole day. This might not be the case this time if stock levels depleted during the three previous drops. Once again, this is expected to be a bog standard restock reserved for BT Broadband customers.

There were 13 PS5 stock drops last week

It was a monstrous week of restocks last week, with not one, not two, not three, not four, not five (we could go on and on), but THIRTEEN whole drops of the PS5. There were three from BT, two from Very and two from PlayStation Direct.

There were also drops from ShopTo, Currys (an actual general sale restock), Studio, Littlewoods, EE, Argos and Hamleys.

Didn’t cop one? You’ve still got a chance to secure a PS5 ahead of Christmas, and we’ll be helping you bag one before the big day.
