Why is there no season 7 of The Crown? Netflix

Bad news for fans of Netflix's The Crown, after seven years and 60 episodes, the recently released season six of the show will officially be the series last. Yep, that's right there's not going to be a season seven of The Crown. We know, we're in mourning too.

The historical drama series has captivated audiences since 2016 with its dramatisation of the life of Queen Elizabeth II and the rest of the Royal Family. From the Queens' marriage to Prince Philip, to Princess Margaret's divorce, to the arrival of Princess Diana, every major milestone in a 60-year period of the Royal Family's lives have been depicted on screen.

However, it seems we won't be getting a chance to see a dramatisation of the most recent moments in royal history as the series won't be getting renewed for a seventh season. So why is this the case? Here's what you need to know.

Why isn't there going to be a season 7 of The Crown?

Back in 2020 The Crown creator Peter Morgan, announced season five would be the series' last, having originally intended for the show to run for six seasons.

Making the announcement Morgan said, "Now that we have begun work on the stories for season five it has become clear to me that this is the perfect time and place to stop."

However, later that same year Morgan then announced they would actually be doing six seasons of the show as when they were planning season five they realised they needed another season in order to give justice to the depth of history of the time period.

"As we started to discuss the storylines for series five, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story, we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons," he explained. "To be clear, series six will not bring us any closer to present-day – it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail."

So why will the show not be entering a seventh season? Well since the beginning of the show Peter Morgan has always said he has a "20 year rule" in which he wanted to stop the show at the point in history 20 years before where we are now, as he believes you need time to step back and reflect on history before turning it into drama.

"I sort of have in my head a 20-year rule. That is enough time and enough distance to really understand something, to understand its role, to understand its position, to understand its relevance," he said.

"Often things that appear absolutely wildly important today are instantly forgotten, and other things have a habit of sticking around and proving to be historically very relevant and long-lasting."

As for whether he ever intended to include Harry and Meghan's story in the drama series, Morgan said he felt the couple are still in the middle of their journey and as we don't know how it will turn out, it doesn't feel right to include it.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2020, Morgan explained: "I just think you get so much more interesting [with time]. Meghan and Harry are in the middle of their journey, and I don’t know what their journey is or how it will end. One wishes some happiness, but I’m much more comfortable writing about things that happened at least 20 years ago.

"I sort of have in my head a 20-year rule. That is enough time and enough distance to really understand something, to understand its role, to understand its position, to understand its relevance."

So sadly it looks like we won't be getting that royal wedding in the series.

However, some good news (!) this may not be the last we ever see of The Crown as Morgan has hinted in a recent interview with Variety that he has a few ideas for spin-offs and potentially a prequel series, pre-dating Queen Elizabeth II too.

Guess we'll just have to keep our fingers crossed for more news on The Crown.
