The pub located where a restaurant and hotel stand today

This site is now occupied by a popular restaurant and a hotel but rewind around 100 years and it was home to this pub.

The Watford Observer has again joined forces with its friends at Watford Museum to look back at structures, objects or businesses from the town’s past that have either disappeared or been relocated and this week we look back at The Crown pub, in Garston.

The museum’s volunteer archivist Christine Orchard said: “This photograph is captioned 'The Crown, Garston' and I think it must have been on St Albans Road where TGI Friday's and Premier Inn are today.

“This small building would have been demolished by Benskin's Brewery, in the late 1930s, to make way for a new larger pub which was set back from the road.

“Despite the vehicle on the forecourt, the pub was certainly in a more rural setting than today as an enamelled advertising sign is fixed to a low building and promotes 'Thorley's Cake' an animal feed.”
