After discovering Tom’s engagement ring hidden in a kitchen drawer, Tuesday’s episode of Quantum Leap saw the ex-army officer directly ask her beau about it rather than wait around for him to eventually pop the question. And it’s a good thing she did because it prompted Tom to propose right then and there, and the pair is now engaged.

It’s a big step for Addison, whose life was turned upside down with Ben’s shocking disappearance and return after three years, because she’s finally starting to live her life on her own terms.

“She’s been wrestling with things happening to her a lot,” portrayer Caitlin Bassett tells TVLine. “My favorite part about [the engagement] is that we’ve started to see Addison make decisions for Addison, and that has changed the dynamic of how that character sits in this series.”

What this also signifies is that Addison really has moved on from her previous romance with Ben, as has the latter, who is now deeply in love with Hannah (played by recurring guest star Eliza Taylor). With both Addison and Ben finding romance elsewhere, does that mean fans hoping to see the two rekindle things should pack it in and call it a day? Is the door permanently shut on them?

“I don’t think anything’s ever shut in a show like this,” Bassett acknowledges. “It’s a time travel show. Things change quickly.”

In the meantime, the trio will have to deal with another curveball: Hannah’s doomed marriage. In this week’s wrap-up, Addison somberly revealed that Hannah’s current husband Josh is poised to die of an aneurism in 18 months, leaving her to raise their son alone. Adding to the heartbreak is the fact that Ben leapt into the next body before he could warn Hannah and potentially save Josh’s life.

Bassett reveals that the way that final scene plays out — how Addison shows concern for Hannah — is not what was originally on the page.

“I remember fighting for it on the day because that scene had a slightly different ending in the original script,” the actress recalls. “I remember being like, ‘I don’t like that,’ because at this point, Addison actually cares about Hannah. Addison and Hannah have a relationship. They might not speak directly, but Hannah knows who [Addison is] and that will be explored further.”

And while Hannah and Addison both fell for Ben at different points, Bassett notes that the trio was never in a love triangle.

“I know the instinct is to make it like a love triangle and [pit] the women against each other,” she adds, “but Eliza and I and everybody were like, ‘No, we’re not doing it. We’re better than that, and nobody’s done anything wrong.’”
