Quantum Leap EPs Tease Season 3 Plan as They Await Renewal Decision

Quantum Leap just set up its most exciting adventure yet — but will we get to see it?

The NBC drama wrapped its shorted, 13-episode sophomore run on Wednesday with a thrilling two-hour finale that essentially reset the whole show.

Hannah (recurring guest star Eliza Taylor) created a code that could potentially bring Ben home, with the caveat that someone had to take his place. Addison, who had trained for and was originally intended to leap, volunteered. But things didn’t go according to plan, so instead of a swap, the army vet joined Ben during his current jump in the past.

For the first time in franchise history, the sci-fi series has positioned two leapers to work in tandem, and that’s an interesting place to be should they have a chance to explore it. (Read our recap and post-mortem interview with the EPs here.)

The NBC drama has not yet been renewed for Season 3, nor have co-showrunners Martin Gero and Dean Georgaris heard anything thing about it as of the publishing of this story, but the EPs have already begun thinking about what comes next if they get the opportunity to continue.

“We know what the shape would be for Season 3, where it would go and how it would end,” Gero explains. “We like to have these seasons feel like standalone novels in a series of books you really love and so, this season had a real beginning, middle and end, and always that little epilogue that is like, ‘This is where we’re going in the future.’ We know the shape of what the Season 3 book would be.”

Geogaris, meanwhile, teases more brevity in a potential third season. “We’ve spent two seasons building up two great leapers and a supporting cast that now may or may not have a code that may or may not work again to pull people out, and it really becomes about what can we affirmatively do with this new dynamic,” he says. “The fact that we can have a little more humor now because we don’t have this heaviness hanging over us. We spent two seasons building up a launchpad to a whole new journey.”

Quantum Leap this season has been averaging 3.7 million total viewers and a 0.45 demo rating (with Live+7 playback), down just a tick from its freshman numbers. Out of the 12 dramas that NBC has aired this TV season, it ranks 10th in total audience (outdrawing only La Brea and the acquired Transplant) and No. 9 in the demo (higher than Magnum P.I., La Brea and Transplant).
