'You are the last in line': Moment of relief for one - and disappointment for other - as Queen's lying in state queue closes

The queue to see the Queen lying in state has been officially closed, with those currently standing in line facing a wait of at least 10 hours.

The cut-off point for queuing was put in place by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) around 10.30pm on Sunday, stopping new people from joining the line in a bid to ensure funeral plans run to schedule.

A statement from the department said: "The queue to attend Her Majesty The Queen's Lying-in-State is at final capacity and is now closed to new entrants.

"Please do not attempt to join the queue. Stewards will manage those already nearby.

"Thank you for your understanding."

A volunteer in a high-visibility jacket handed out the final wristband, saying to the lucky recipient: "You are the last person to join the queue."

"Oh bless you!" she exclaimed to groans and cries of "oh no," from people behind.

"We went the wrong way. If we had gone the right way, we would have made it."

Public viewing will close at 6.30am on Monday, ahead of the state funeral, which will begin at 11am in Westminster Abbey.

For a second night running, those queuing faced cold conditions, with temperatures falling overnight and St John Ambulance expressing concern.

Entry to the accessible queue had already been closed on Saturday, after all available slots were allocated.

Tens of thousands of people have travelled to the capital over the past few days - coming from abroad as well as from all over the UK - for a chance to pay their respects to Britain's longest reigning monarch inside Westminster Hall.

The number of mourners was always expected to ramp up ahead of the state funeral.

The Queen has been lying in state in Westminster Hall since 5pm on Wednesday. The hall has stood open 24 hours a day since - except for short breaks for cleaning - for mourners to pay their final respects.

Some people have been camping out on The Mall, near Buckingham Palace, for days to ensure they have a prime spot for the Queen's funeral procession.
