Award season is in full swing, which means we're getting a little bit of an insight into the private lives of our favourite stars. Whether that means Emma Stone thanking her husband Dave McCary during her Golden Globes acceptance speech, or Cillian Murphy bringing his son to award shows. Robert Downey Jr. has also been joking around with his wife on the red carpet; but who is Susan Downey?
She's a producer
Susan, now 50, and Robert, 58, first met on the set of Gothika in 2003, a film starring Halle Berry as a psychiatrist who works in an all-female asylum alongside her husband, played by the actor. Susan was a producer at Silver Pictures at the time, working on films like The Book of Eli and Orphan.
She also worked on Sherlock Holmes in 2009 and Iron Man 2 in 2010, helping to facilitate the fact Robert was in the films. Also in 2010, the pair set up their own production company called Team Downey, later releasing their first movie, The Judge, in 2014. In it, Robert plays Hank, a hot shot lawyer who returns to his hometown when his father - a judge - is accused of murder.
They've been together for 20 years
Robert and Susan got engaged in early 2004 after just a few months of dating. They got married the year after, with a ceremony in Long Island, New York, held in August 2005.
Marking their 18 year wedding anniversary in 2023, Robert took to Instagram to share a snap from their wedding, along with the caption, "18 years, love still in bloom!!"
They have two children together
Robert and Susan have a son and a daughter; Exton Elias, who was born on the 7th February 2012, and Avri Roel, who was born two years later on 4th November, 2014.
Speaking about their family life to The Hollywood Reporter, Susan says she didn't want children before meeting Robert. "I didn’t care about having a family or making a home. I didn’t think about kids. It’s not that I didn’t want those things, I just didn’t think about them. And then I had someone who came in as a tornado, this creative, beautiful ball of insane energy and passion. And it completely opened me up."
Robert also has a son, Indio Falconer from his first marriage to Deborah Falconer, who was born in September 1993. The pair were married in 1992 and split in 2001, though their divorce wasn't finalised until 2004.
They often walk the red carpets together
Susan is no stranger to the limelight, and often attends events with Robert, even walking the red carpet alongside him.Recently, the duo were photographed larking around alongside his Oppenheimer cast-mates at an event in January 2024:
