Quitting iPhone Apps Doesn’t Save Your Battery, Reveals Apple

Apple has debunked one of the biggest myths about the iPhone battery, that closing down apps helps to save power.

After an Apple user contacted CEO Tim Cook for an official answer on whether quitting apps can prolong battery life, the tech brand’s iOS chief Craig Federighi replied with a resounding “no”, according to 9to5mac.com.

Users can easily close down apps on Apple devices by double-pressing the home button and swiping up on each app window.

Rather than preserving battery life, all this actually does is resolve any glitches if apps aren’t running properly. A bit like turning a computer off and on again.

“On a technical level, most of the apps are either frozen in RAM or not running at all, the system just displays them as a history for consistency. This is why the battery life impact is negligible,” explains 9to5mac.com.

The only apps that can affect battery are those that actively perform background operations such as playing music or GPS navigation, though they’re really running when they’re actually being used.
