An RAF serviceman based in Suffolk has undertaken three gruelling challenges to raise funds for the force's leading welfare charity.

Doug McCorkindale, stationed at RAF Honington near Bury St Edmunds, completed the London and Edinburgh Marathons and the Welsh 3000s across three months.

Overall, he surpassed his initial target of £500 - currently standing at £965.

Mr McCorkindale, 39, in his 10th year in the RAF, said: “I like to have physical goals to work towards to help keep me focused – and what better motivation than raising some charity money in the process.”

Alongside the marathons, Mr McCorkindale's recent challenge involved the Welsh 3000s - which required climbing 15 mountains over 3000 feet in Wales.

Speaking on his London Marathon challenge and the support from the crowd, he said: "There was no shortage of crowds of random strangers shouting out words of encouragement.

"It was such a morale boost."

Despite being drenched at the start of the Edinburgh Marathon, Mr McCorkindale committed to finishing the race, albeit a little disappointed with his time of three hours and 47 minutes.

On June 26, he embarked on the Welsh 3000s alongside fellow serviceman Campbell Steel, 38.

The pair climbed a total height of 3560ft and completed their journey across 15 peaks in 18 hours.

He described his motivation, saying: "Being in the RAF, I've seen first-hand the amazing work the RAF Benevolent Fund does and the support on offer.

"Ensuring the charity remains funded and can continue its work for those currently serving, their families, and veterans is vitally important."

Mr McCorkindale concluded by expressing gratitude to all his supporters.

A fundraiser for his endeavour is still active on JustGiving, steadily approaching his £1,000 goal.

The funds raised benefit the RAF Benevolent Fund, which provides a myriad of services including financial assistance, mental health support and youth programs for RAF members and their families.
