Heavy rain, snow, freezing rain are on their way for some central and southern regions of New Brunswick.

Mild temperatures will begin to drop Wednesday night, which will cause the switch from rain to snow and ice.

"Winter is coming and it is going to be a mess," as CBC meteorologist Tina Simpkin put it.

Snowfall warnings are in place for Kent County and Kouchibouguac National Park, and rainfall warnings for Saint John, Grand Manan, St. Stephen and Sussex.

The rainfall warnings say 25 to 45 millimetres of rain can be expected Wednesday into Thursday morning, with localized flooding in low-lying areas possible.

Sussex, one of the regions with the warning in place, faced extreme flooding last week, which resulted in road closures and evacuations after a day-long rainstorm swept through the province.

About 200 millimetres of rain fell on Sussex, according to local weather gauges. Other areas of the province also experienced some localized flooding and road washouts.

The snowfall warning is for Wednesday night into Thursday evening. The rain is expected to quickly transition to snow around midnight Wednesday night, with a risk of freezing rain during the transition, specifically over Kent County.

Up to 20 centimetres of snow could also fall in Kent County.

Other regions of the province are also expected to get icy and snowy conditions in the weather changeover. Some central and southern areas, including Fredericton and Moncton, will see 15 to 25 millimetres of rain and also some snow.

The statement says there is still "significant uncertainty" regarding the amount of freezing rain versus ice pellets.

Southeastern New Brunswick is "the most likely area to receive a significant period of freezing rain," according to Environment Canada.
