Rare Ice Pancakes Form on Scottish River as Cold Weather Grips UK

A rare phenomenon known as ice pancakes formed on a Scottish river as cold temperatures continued to impact the UK on Wednesday, December 14.

Footage captured by Sumac MacDiarmid shows discs of ice – which form when foam floating on a river surface freezes – drifting by a waterfall at Linn Park in Glasgow.

According to the UK’s Met Office, the discs are a “relatively rare phenomenon that tend to occur in very cold oceans and lakes,” and are most frequently seen in the Baltic Sea, Antarctica, and North America’s Great Lakes.

On Thursday, the Met Office said the nation would remain cold through the rest of the week and into the weekend.
