Rare whale bones found during construction project

Excavations for a tram project in Edinburgh have revealed a number of historically important objects.

The City of Edinburgh council reports that among them are two bones from the fin of a sperm whale.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic they have not yet been dated, but one theory is that they were brought back in the 19th or 20th century as a momento.

One other popular ideas that they date back to the medieval period and "were part of medieval deposits left there during the reclamation of the site in the 17th to 19th centuries."
