Rawtenstall schoolgirl puts in the hours to become top junior diver in UK

A secondary school student has returned home after a triumphant week at the British Elite Junior Diving Championships where she solidified her position as the top junior diver in the country.

Amy Wright, who attends Alder Grange’s Sixth Form Centre in Rawtenstall, secured a silver medal in the one metre springboard event, competing against the best of British diving talent. She went on to top the three metre springboard competition, showcasing her exceptional skills and taking home the gold medal.

These impressive results have earned Amy the national number one ranking and a coveted spot on the British team competing at the Junior European Diving Championships in Poland in July. Amy said: “I am really proud of my achievements.

“I have been diving for nine years and travel to Leeds to train for over 15 hours per week.

“Alder Grange have supported me throughout my diving career, allowing me time off for training and competitions and ensuring I don’t fall behind on my school work. My friends are also really understanding as I have to schedule in everything I do and often miss social events due to training.

“I am excited about how far I can take my diving.”

In addition to the European Championships, Amy is currently competing for Team England at the 2024 TYR Junior Americas Cup in Mission Viejo, California, and has her eye on other competitions and travels.

Amy studies Physical Education and Psychology and school staff say her achievements are a ‘shining example of dedication and talent’, and are a ‘source of immense pride’ amongst the staff and fellow students.

Headteacher, Jo Griffiths, said: “We are all incredibly proud of Amy, she successfully balances the enormous demands of her diving career with exceptional academic performance and she never complains about being tired!

“She is always cheerful and humble.”
