An eastern P.E.I. man faces charges of arson, resisting arrest and assault with a weapon following a fire in Georgetown on Saturday.

Police responded to the report of a fire at an abandoned house shortly after 5 p.m.

"Upon arrival, police were alerted to information that led them to believe this was an arson. Police also gathered information which led to a suspect," said P.E.I. RCMP Cpl. Gavin Moore.

When they located the 20-year-old man he threatened officers with a shovel, according to an RCMP news release. The man made his first court appearance Monday morning, Moore said.

The Three Rivers Fire Department responded to the fire, but the house was destroyed.
