“The Real CSI: Miami” trailer is here. Sadly, no one takes off their sunglasses

The show marks the franchise’s first American true crime entry.

CSI is finally getting real.

CBS premiered the first trailer for The Real CSI: Miami Monday (above). As the title suggests, the series is a true crime documentary project that follows actual detectives and law enforcement officers as they investigate actual cases in the Sunshine State. The show appears to be more grimy and grounded than its fictional sister series — unfortunately, there’s no dramatic removal of sunglasses to be found in any of the preview footage, but that likely speaks to the participants’ professionalism and the show’s overall seriousness.

The trailer explains the basic premise for the show: “Detectives are investigating a real-life whodunnit,” a narrator explains. “You need to allow the evidence to tell the story, because it will tell you the truth,” another speaker says.

The trailer also emphasizes the importance of obtaining fingerprints and DNA in linking suspects to a case. “Blood evidence speaks when no one else can,” someone says. “ DNA is irrefutable,” another notes.

Later, one participant notes that some behavior in the series might not be completely virtuous — and it’s not clear if he’s talking about a law enforcement officer or a suspect. “Was it legal? Absolutely. Was it a little sneaky? Absolutely,” the speaker says.

CBS also released a few clips from the first episode of the series, one of which features audio footage of a 911 call. “I believe we have two dead people next door. There’s three young children roaming the streets,” the caller says. “Why do you think they’re deceased?” the dispatcher responds. “‘Cause there’s blood all over the floors and the walls,” the caller says.

The clip identifies the victims as Carlos Ortiz and Tara, and another clip offers a little background on the deceased. “Carlos was incarcerated for a period of time for the use of narcotics, but he did have a desire to really make right and be good, you know, settle down,” one participant explains. “He had this American dream. He wanted to become an entrepreneur and have his own tattoo shop. Carlos recently moved in with Tara, and from what investigators know, he had been helping out with her kids,” says investigator Mary's Martinez.

The Real CSI: Miami marks the sixth American series in the broader CSI franchise, which launched in 2000 with its flagship series. The other CSI series are Miami, NY, Cyber, and Vegas. While this is the first documentary spinoff produced in the United States, the United Kingdom did have two similar programs in the wake of CSI’s success: The Real CSI and True CSI, both of which follow actual investigations.

The Real CSI: Miami premieres on CBS on Wednesday, June 26.
