Warren Gatland's offer to resign, after giving Wales their first no-win run in the Six Nations and their first Wooden Spoon since 2003, has been rejected - and WalesOnline's rugby fans have been giving their verdict on a hapless tournament. Gatland has said that he plans to remain in post until at least 2027 World Cup in Australia.

Gatland's recent record in the Six Nations since returning to the Wales job has been dismal. Despite an improved World Cup showing, Gatland has won just one of his 10 Six Nations matches since replacing Wayne Pivac - who paid the price for similar defeats to Italy and Georgia in 2022.

WalesOnline readers have different views on how to improve Wales' lot going forward.

OldPenarthian wrote: "The real tragedy here is that absolutely nothing will change. The regions will still be hopeless, the governing body will remain complicit in the team's demise, the 25 cap rule will not be scrapped and talent will continue to be lost to the side because of it, favourites will carry on being picked regardless of form, despite lessons allegedly being learnt the almost total absence of basic skills will still be on show next time out, members of the coaching team who are clearly having no positive impact will keep their jobs and unfit, out of shape players will not be told to shape up.

"Any glimmers of hope are more than obscured by the gloom because history tells us the WRU will still be happy as long as they continue to fill the world's biggest pub on match days with fans dressed up as daffodils. As for the team, the notion of cycles and coming good again are not based on reason and are for the birds. The under-20s mirror the senior team and there is simply not the nucleus of world-class players to build around. Young team or not, without the skill and power to compete you're in terminal freefall so Wales had better keep a space in the trophy cabinet for the Wooden Spoon, they're going to need it."

Simondc1711 stood up for Gatland, saying: "He is without doubt the best coach for the rebuilding of the national team. He has had to work with untested and internationally immature players. There will be a number of changes during the next couple of seasons as we start to recover and strengthen the player base. We are back to the 1990s and must be patient again as our player base is shallow of international talent with obvious restraints such as the 25 cap barrier and players opting to increase their living standards by playing abroad."

"The WRU need to address these as a matter of urgency and then bring in five-year plans for homegrown players to be plying their trade every Saturday instead of sitting in the stands. Playing regularly is the surest way of ironing out flaws and highlighting flaws in up-and-coming players?"

At times I wondered what I was watching...and commentators saying the line speed of Italy could not be matched, absolutely nonsense if the speed onto the ball carrier is good, it leaves so much space behind and its not rocket science!"

BhagwanH said: "Time to walk away. This is not the job for Gatland. He will be better served taking a break from the game and coming back, if he chooses, to manage at club or national level with top quality time served players. The facts are not pleasant. The administration of rugby in the professional era has all but killed the game. Skill levels of available players are clearly not there. Nobody is saying our best Welsh players are taking other jobs and leaving the game. The applied malaise from on high has paid a few a lot and cost the nation it's game. Money for nothing. If you can make this much money playing badly why bother working at it?"

Ppaertiger called it as they saw it by saying: "Let's be totally honest & frank. The system in Wales is broken. There are players representing Wales that are simply poor. We have no A team to link young players to the national side. Our structure regarding the resentment of players is a joke. It's not rocket science, Ireland has done a fantastic job with the integration of 6 form colleges."

Tannerbanc says: "WG is a man of integrity, he has made clear the issues with the player base we have and offered to resign but that not having been accepted has committed to see his contract through. What else can the man do. At least the WRU got something right and did not accept his resignation."

Welshasyoulike said: "He's a legend. We're a bitter bunch. He saw us through some superb times, boys. He'll rise again like a Phoenix from the Ashes. Come on, support the boys!"

Dellyboy says: "No variation in the back play. Get in a backs coach who can teach loop around, inside pass, missed pass etc. Schoolboy stuff at the moment. Straight across the line."

Debatenothate stated: "On one hand I feel for Gatland. He's working with one hand tied behind his back with the 25 cap rule (which there are positives and negatives too), and has seen a raft of retirements and players making career changes. On top of that, the players he is currently working with are not winners, those at Welsh regions are used to losing domestically too, and something fundamentally has to change there to improve the quality of the players.

"On the other hand, I think Gatland has a stubborn streak which is costing him and Wales. All fans/pundits are saying we're short of big ball carriers, yet two of the most impressive ball carriers at the regional level don't even make the squad (Morris and Kieran Williams at the Ospreys). They are two players who have played consistently well over the past two seasons but don't get a look in for some unknown reason. These players are young and will improve and become more physical as they mature. Up until Gatland offered his resignation I felt he was the right man to take us forward, but having heard he even had a moment's thought about quitting is starting to make me think otherwise."

Topgrampa said: "Gatland must go. His record is appalling and he's never actually won anything without Edwards at his side. I've noticed that people have commented that they see signs of improvement, well, they must have been watching different games to me as from where I'm standing we've gone back a mile with zero signs of progress. Take our scrum for just one example, it's got to the stage where we can almost guarantee conceding a scrum penalty when up against the likes of Ireland and we've got South Africa on the horizon so Heaven help us there. Also, the CEO rejected Gatland's offer of resignation. l wonder if she's given any consideration to the long-suffering supporters who shell out up to £115 to watch this rubbish and l wonder if she'll drop the price of admission to about a fiver because that's all it's worth. This is all such a shame because yesterday there was plenty of talent in the Welsh shirts but they looked like they'd just met that morning."
