Council bosses have issued a warning to locals in Nuneaton and Bedworth who put out too much extra recycling on the kerbside. Some may have seen stickers placed on excess cardboard and paper they left out to be collected.

This is because changes were made following the tragic death of Coventry bin man David Carpenter who was crushed to death after being lifted in a bin lorry while out on collections in the neighouring city last year. Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, working with Coventry City Council - which undertakes recycling collections on behalf of the local council - changed its policy on how much extra cardboard and paper it would collect.

The Town Hall has said that, in recent weeks, a 'small number' of residents have seen stickers placed on their excess cardboard that was not removed on their recycling day. This is because it was too deemed 'too large' to be collected.

"The council has now taken steps to enforce its policy of only taking reasonable amounts of excess cardboard and paper," a spokesperson said. "To ensure that operatives are able to safely collect the excess material, households must ensure that it is able to fit into their brown-lid bin.

"Any excess cardboard will be placed inside the bin once it has been emptied of its original contents, which allows the operatives to safely dispose of its contents.

"If the excess cardboard cannot fit in the bin, it is unable to be safely collected by the team."

The council has said that if householders are routinely finding they have more cardboard and paper than they can fit in their brown-lid bin, then they can choose to buy an extra one.
