Redditch local election results in full as Labour seize control of council

Labour has snatched control of Redditch Borough Council after a thumping victory at the local elections. The result - and the resounding nature of it - was a huge statement for Labour as the party finished with a massive 15-seat majority.

It was all change in the Worcestershire town as voters made their feelings known. The Conservatives, who were previously in control of the council, were left with just five councillors as the party was left to lick its wounds in Redditch.

Labour are now in full command with a mighty 21 councillors and it's the first time since 2018 they have led the council. The Greens gained their first councillor while the Lib Dems lost their only one.

The loss of Redditch was daunting sign for the Conservatives. The party has already lost over 100 councillors across the country, with many results still to come in later on Friday.

The all-out election in Redditch presented the possibility of a big swing to Labour, and that's exactly what happened as the Conservatives lost 11 seats and Labour gained nine. The new Labour leader in Redditch, Joe Baker, said he was stunned by the size of the overwhelming victory.

"I'm overwhelmed by the size of the majority," he told the BBC. "It means a stable and fresh start for Redditch. I can't wait to get started."

It was among the first Midlands council results to be declared, with most others to be announced later on Friday afternoon. Council seats are being contested in the Black Country, Solihull and parts of Staffordshire and Worcestershire.
