It’s one of the most-demanded (and controversial) upgrades to the library of emoji we use on our phones – a red-haired emoji.

And it is, finally, going to happen according to Unicode, the organisation which ensures emoji work across different brands of phones and PCs.

The organisation unveiled four new additions to the emoji library, all set to appear in June next year – with male and female redheads, curly haired faces, swans and the infinity symbol.

For several years, redheads have been vexed that there is no emoji for their hair type – but several different shades of hair for vampires, for instance.

In Scotland – where 13% of the population is ginger – there have been online petitions for a ginger emoji.

A list of new emoji was approved at the Unicode Technical Committee meeting with Apple, according to Jeremy Burge, editor-in-chief of Emojipedia.

Burge said, ‘The most common feedback to Emojipedia since Apple released iOS 11.1 has been, “But what about the redheads?”’

The new emoji will arrive in June 2018.
